About

Welcome to ITPodcast.org. I am Spencer Hamons, and I live in Bethel, Alaska where I work with various groups defining and implementing some long term strategic goals for the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation.  This site was started on January 2nd, 2008 with the intention of housing a blog and posting podcasts about leadership in healthcare and technology operations.  This site has changed quite a bit since 2008, with the addition of some resources new (and old) leaders can download, ideas for new ways to manage and motivate others, and even ways to better manage yourself.  I hope that you find this useful, and that this site becomes a resource you visit often.  Of course, I don’t know it all, so I need your input telling me when I am wrong, when you disagree, or even to provide your own insights into good leadership practices.  You can email me at any time at spencer@itpodcast.org.

You can learn about how I view leadership and the importance of working together by listening to one of my podcasts here:

In case you are interested, I will offer some personal information about myself.

I am married to Coryee Hamons, who happens to be the Director of Risk Management at the Yukon-Kuskokwim Health Corporation and who has worked with me at other facilities in jobs ranging from Director of Quality, Patient Safety, and Performance Improvement.  With that background you can likely imagine that Joint Commission, quality initiatives, and performance improvement are close to my heart.  I also have a son, Andrew who loves his computers just about as much as his Dad does, and loves to enjoy the great outdoors of Alaska with Coryee and I.

You can find my complete work history on the Career page of this site if you are interested.  But I will provide a brief history here.

Prior to coming to Alaska,  I was the Chief Information Officer at SLV Regional Medical Center in Colorado.  Before that, I was the Corporate Director of Community Hospital IT for The Methodist Hospital System in Houston, Texas where I was responsible for all IT operations at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital, San Jacinto Methodist Hospital, and Methodist Willowbrook Hospital.  Although I worked at the corporate offices in the Texas Medical Center, I reported to the CEOs of each of these community hospitals that ranged in size from 115 beds to 250 beds.  In addition to leading the technology aspects of these facilities and assuring strategic congruence with The Methodist Hospital’s strategic technology plan, I also acted in various operational capacities at these facilities.

Going further back in time, I worked for Columbia/HCA where I was the Director of IT for Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston, and at Conroe Regional Medical Center. I was a Combat Medic (91B) for the United States Army and was stationed in ChunChon, South Korea before transitioning to the Texas Army National Guard.

I hope you find this site useful, and that you will contribute your thoughts and opinions so others in our industry can learn.  None of us know it all, but if we can develop a concept of shared urgency within ourselves, those we lead, and others in our industry…what we can learn from each other will overshadow what we already know.

Thank you for visiting!

Tried to reply to your email but it kept getting kicked back to me. The picture on my profile is from my wife’s cousin’s (sounds “hickish” doesn’t it?) (I’m originally a Californian) property up in Tetonia Idaho, just at the base of the Grand Tetons. Incredibly beautiful spot.
I’ve been told the barns are gone now but I haven’t been to their place in a couple of years so I’m not sure.
I saw your fstop page. WOW! Great pictures! There are several galleries in Jackson Wyoming I’m sure you could sell them to. They have some pretty incredible shots themselves.
Here’s a site you can look at to get some pretty good webcam shots of our surrounding area:

Keep up the good work on this site. I really think you’ve got a good thing going. I’ll do my part to spread the word.

    Sincerely,
