IT Never Events

On the January 7, 2008 podcast we discussed the National Quality Forum’s list of 27 “Never Events”, events that should never occur in a healthcare setting.  During the podcast, I proposed that we, healthcare’s IT professionals and leaders determine our own list of never events.  Here are the proposed “IT Never Events” as our listeners have determined them.

Patient harm as a result of wrong electronic data

Intentional patient information disclosure by employees

Downtime of Clinical or Patient-centric systems greater than 8 hours

Critical issues unresolved without at least a work-around for more than 48 hours

Utilization of technology as a facilitator or excuse for bad customer service

Telling customers, “that is not my job”.
